Key Safety & Policy Areas:

Supervision & Ratios:

Direct visual contact with children is required unless they are napping, in which case infant monitors are permitted.
Staff-to-child ratios vary by age group and are stricter for excursions away from the center.
Child care centres have specific maximum staff:child ratios for infants (1:3), toddlers (1:5), preschool (1:10), and school-age (1:15) children.
Family child care homes may care for a maximum of eight children, with specific limitations on the number of infants and toddlers.

Safety Measures:
Safety gates at staircases, safe storage of medications and cleaning supplies, and Canadian Safety Standards for equipment are mandated.
Proper use of car seats during transportation and a clear policy for child pick-up are essential. Emergency evacuation procedures, including practice drills, must be in place.
Injury prevention is crucial, recognizing that most injuries are predictable and preventable through proactive measures.

Child Management & Development:
Corporal punishment, physical, emotional, or verbal abuse, denial of necessities, isolation, and inappropriate restraint are strictly prohibited.
Daily programs should be developmentally appropriate and responsive to children’s interests, utilizing emergent curriculum principles.
Medication administration requires written authorization and secure, locked storage for non-emergency medications.

Staff Qualifications:
Saskatchewan child care centers have three levels of ECE certification: ECE III, ECE II, and ECE I. Centre directors hired after 2001 generally need to meet or exceed ECE III qualifications.

Affordability:
Through agreements with the federal government, Saskatchewan aims to reduce child care fees, with a goal of $10 a day by 2025/2026 for regulated child care for children under six.
